Was Lockdown Necessary?

One of the main reasons the US, and many other countries, ordered a shutdown is that WHO initially estimated that the number of deaths of those infected by the coronavirus could be as high as 2 to 4 percent. The projected number of deaths due to the virus in the US was initially projected to be over 2 million according to the model created by the CDC (Dr. Fauci and Dr. Birx). With more information available, the estimate was revised to be between 100 and 200 thousand a few weeks later. The number is somewhat higher than the average number of deaths due to the seasonal flu. The national coronavirus lockdown has resulted in the destruction of the US economy and demoralizing of the citizens who have lost their jobs. By implementing a complete national shutdown it may turn out that the cure is worse than the disease. The health of US citizens and the US economy may have been better served by targeted quarantines of those with challenged immune systems, social distancing, and recommended precautions for others. Sweden claims that their rate of death according to the coronavirus is no different than the rates for countries that are implementing a lockdown. An experiment was recently performed in Santa Clara County in California that showed the death rate would not be much different than that of the seasonal flu. However, it will take more experiments in other parts of the country to confirm these numbers. A top Israeli professor has concluded that “Simple statistical analysis demonstrates that the spread of COVID-19 peaks after about 40 days and declines to almost zero after 70 days — no matter where it strikes, and no matter what measures governments impose to try to thwart it.” We can’t keep doing a full national lockdown for every virus that comes along in the future. There must be a better solution.
